Clone Town Chesterfield?
Speakers and discussion
Tuesday 22nd July. Doors open
6:30pm, start 7pm.
Town Hall,
Chesterfield

All over the country, local shops, independent breweries and green spaces are disappearing, taken over by identical chain cafes, mega pubs and sprawling shopping centres. Why is this happening, and what can we do about it?

Paul Kingsnorth is an acclaimed writer and journalist, and author of 'Real England'. He has travelled the country talking to the campaigners, shop keepers and pub landlords who are fighting to save the small, the local and the distinctive in their communities. Paul will share these stories of loss and hope, and argue that there's still time to save our towns and landscapes from the forces of globalisation.

Jan Stanley is the regional organiser for the Federation of Small Businesses, which represents over 215,000 small businesses, and is lobbying the government to provide more protection for local independent retailers. Jan will speak about the FSB’s national ‘Keep Trade Local’ campaign, and assess the situation here in Chesterfield.

There will be time for questions and lively discussion during the evening, so please join in! Paul will be signing copies of his book 'Real England', and other leaflets and literature will be available to browse or take away.

The event will be held in the Town Hall on Rose Hill, Chesterfield. Doors will open at 6:30pm for a 7pm start. Entry is free, and donations welcome.  This event is organised by Transition Chesterfield, in collaboration with the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).
